The Stigma

Erase the stigma – HIV doesn’t define us, compassion does.

HIV stigma means negative attitudes, beliefs, and discrimination against people with HIV or AIDS. It comes from fear, misinformation, and prejudice and can show up in different ways, like:

Stigma

People living with HIV may face rejection, isolation, or ostracism from their families, friends, and communities due to their HIV status. This social exclusion can lead to feelings of loneliness, shame, and low self-esteem.

Discrimination

Fear of judgment or mistreatment may deter individuals from seeking HIV testing, treatment, and care, leading to poorer health outcomes.

Challenges

HIV-related stigma persists globally, leading to discrimination against individuals living with the virus. This stigma can deter people from seeking testing, treatment, and support services, exacerbating the spread of HIV and hindering efforts to provide comprehensive care.

What can I do to help

Promote accurate information about HIV transmission, prevention, and treatment to dispel myths and misconceptions. Providing education about the realities of living with HIV can foster empathy and understanding, reducing stigma.
